The Greensboro College women's basketball team welcomed Mary Baldwin University in a USA South Athletic Conference matchup. After a tightly contested first three quarters, the Pride topped the Squirrels, 71-54.
Mary Baldwin (5-4, 1-3) scored the opening basket of the contest. Greensboro (8-1, 2-1) responded by scoring nine of the next 10 points to lead 9-3 at the 5:39 mark of the first.
The Squirrels pulled with two (9-7) before the Pride went on a 14-2 run as
Aliyah Whiteside scored six of the 14. MBU slowly trimmed away at the deficit but trailed by 12 (25-13) at the end of the first.
In the second, the Squirrels wasted no time getting back into the game as they scored nine-straight to trail 25-22 with 5:25 to go. Later in the period, Mary Baldwin pulled within one (31-30) but five-consecutive points by
Ta'Keria Legette gave Greensboro a 36-30 lead at the half.
The third period was the most even of all the periods with the Pride out scored the Squirrels 15-13 to hold an eight-point edge (51-43) as the game headed to the final 10 minutes of regulation.
MBU opened the fourth with back-to-back field goals but GC had an answer with a three and a layup to lead 56-47. The Pride continued its run by going on a 13-3 run to open a 19-point advantage with 2:11 remaining in regulation. Greensboro went on to win by the 17-point difference.
The Pride were led by
Lauren Livingston with 25 points as she shot 8-17 from the field with five assists and three steals. Legette had a strong performance with 18 points and 15 rebounds, her second double-double of the season.Â
GC grabbed 46 rebounds on the day with 19 assists on 25 of its field goals. Mary Baldwin was led by Mya Coleman with 14 points.
Greensboro travels to William Peace University on Tuesday, December 14 for a USA South contest. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m.
