MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Chance Bryant hit a grand-slam in the top half of the third inning to help the Greensboro College baseball team defeat the Falcons of Pfeiffer University Friday, 10-5.
After a
Scotty McGuire single and a pair of walks in the third inning, Bryant placed a 0-2 pitch into the trees in center field to give Greensboro a 4-0 lead.
The score then remained the same until the fourth when the Falcons pulled to within three runs, but Greensboro went on to extend their lead to 9-1 with a five-run fifth inning. Bryant drew a bases loaded walk for the innings first run before
Braxton Rupp tallied a RBI groundout to score
Michael Garvey Jr. After scoring the third run of the inning on a passed ball,
Kendal Tucker and McGuire tallied RBI doubles.
With Greensboro holding on to the eight-run lead, Pfeiffer was able to put together a big inning for their own in the sixth as they scored four runs to cut the Pride advantage to four runs. However, Greensboro did not let that inning phase them as they went on to add one more run in the ninth inning to secure the five-run victory.
Garvey Jr., Tucker, and McGuire each finished with two hits on the day while Bryant finished with five RBIs.
Parker Strader started the game on the mound for Greensboro and pitched six innings and was credited with the win.
Jake Baldini saw his first action of the season on the mound and threw three scoreless innings to pick up the save, while striking out two batters.
The Pride will return to Pfeiffer Saturday for Game 2 of the three-game USA South Athletic Conference series. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
