GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team dropped both games of their season opening doubleheader against the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College Friday at Ted Leonard Park.
Elmira won the opening game by an 8-5 score before rallying back in the late innings of Game 2 to win 6-5.
"We are glad to finally get out on the field and start the season," Head Coach
Frank Maldonado said. "It was not the outcome that we wanted but we saw some really positive things.
"Cam Peters and
Blake Carroll had really good approaches at the plate while
Eli Moravick,
Chenzo Scanio, and few of our other freshman pitchers really excelled on the mound."
Game One
Greensboro got on the board first with one run in the first inning on a
Cameron Peters single through the middle of the infield before Elmira struck for eight runs over the next five innings to take a 8-1 lead into the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, Greensboro got one run back when
Jacob Rodriguez played
Scotty McGuire with a single to right-center field.
After the Rodriguez RBI hit in the eighth, Greensboro continued battling back in the ninth but could not overcome the six-run deficit despite scoring three runs in the ninth.
Peters tallied another RBI in the ninth while McGuire recorded a two RBI single through the middle.
Will Hicks (0-1) started the game and took the loss after giving up five runs over three innings while
Cole Cooper,
Jacob Switzer,
Chenzo Scanio,
Peyton Ebel, and
Preston Snyder also saw action on the mound.
Blake Carroll finished the game with a team-leading three hits while Peters and McGuire had two RBI each.
Game Two
Elmira took a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning before Carroll and
Jacob Rodriguez recorded back-to-back RBI doubles to give Greensboro a 2-1 lead.
The Pride then maintained their one-run advantage until the seventh when Peters hit a missile off the top of the right field fence to score
Hunter Curtis, Carroll, and
Tim Osborne.
With Greensboro leading 5-1 heading into the eight, the Soaring Eagles tied the game with a four-run inning before taking a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth.
In the bottom, the Pride was able to load the bases but could not push the tying run across.
Despite pitching seven innings of one run baseball, starter
Eli Moravick did not factor into the decision.
Joseph Hoelle took the loss after giving up one run in one inning of relief.
The Pride baseball team will return to action at 3 p.m. Friday when they host Guilford College in the first game of a three-game season series.
