Greensboro, NC-
Morgan Mayfield from volleyball and both
Cameron Turner and
KJ Brown of football have been named this week's Greensboro College Athletes of the Week.
Mayfield notched nine assists, an ace and 16 digs against Pfeiffer in midweek action last week before putting together one of the best matches of her stellar and decorated career on Saturday against N.C. Wesleyan. Facing the Battling Bishops, Mayfield recorded a pair of aces and four assists, while setting a career-high with 46 digs, breaking her previous career-best of 45 set in 2024. As a result, she also broke her old school-record for most digs in a five-set match, as the Pride eked out the victory. The Pride's all-time digs leader ranks second in the USA South in digs per set and third in total digs this season.
Volleyball has assumed first place in the USA South and travels to Brevard on Wednesday before hosting William Peace and Johnson & Wales in a Saturday tri-match.
Football scored a resounding 42-20 homecoming win against Southern Virginia on Saturday, and Brown and Turner were two of many players to have standout days. After two straight games without throwing a touchdown pass, Turner righted the ship in a huge way, completing 21 of 33 passing for a career-high 364 yards and four touchdowns (tying a career-best), plus another touchdown on the ground. His 364 passing yards were the ninth-most in a single game in program history. He also surpassed Anthony Durham (2001-03) for 10th on the career passing yards list, while also passing Durham and Seth Adams (2009-10) on the career touchdown list with 14. His 85-yard touchdown pass to
KJ Brown was the third longest pass in Pride history.
Brown put together a career day coming off a pair of trying weeks. After combining for just two catches and 22 yards over the previous two games, Brown hauled in four passes for 153 yards and two scores. Both of his touchdown receptions went for big yards; a 53-yard score to pull the Pride to within one score in the second quarter, and the aforementioned 85-yard catch and run to give Greensboro a 28-20 second half lead. His 153 yards on the day missed the single game Top-10 in program history by just two yards. He is 12 career yards away from becoming the 12th receiver in program history to reach 1,000 career yards.
Football travels to Huntingdon on Saturday in an attempt to put together consecutive wins and go above .500.Â
