Greensboro, NC- Goalkeeper
Alyssa Lane of women's soccer and defender
Brandon Droese from men's soccer have been named this week's Greensboro College Athletes of the Week.
Lane continued what has been a stellar freshman campaign with two more dominant showings this week. At Brevard, Lane made three stops and took a shutout into the closing minutes, before the Tornados salvaged a 1-1 draw. Then, in taking on conference-leading Southern Virginia on Saturday, Lane held firm time after time, stopping all eight shots she faced as the Pride battled to a hard-fought 0-0 draw. For Lane, it marked her fifth clean sheet of the season, moving her into a four-way tie for seventh on the single-season list. In addition, she now joins a three-way tie for most career shutouts. On the season, her 0.84 GAA ranks second in the conference, while also placing in the top five in shutouts and save percentage.
Women's soccer is on the road this week; first at non-conference Johnson & Wales, followed by a USA South tilt at Mary Baldwin.
As a defender for men's soccer, Droese's contributions this season cannot accurately be measured in numbers alone. He is routinely a force on the back line of the Pride's defense, making big stops and forcing turnovers that turn into scoring chances. Droese finally got a chance of his own this past weekend. Against Mary Baldwin, the freshman put two shots on goal and, in the 86th minute, found the back of the net for the game-winning score in a 1-0 Pride victory. The goal also marked his first career goal at the collegiate level
Men's soccer travels to Durham on Tuesday to take on the 5-8 Duke Blue Devils, fresh off a loss against #1 SMU. The Pride return to conference action on Saturday with road battle at William Peace.
