The Greensboro College Baseball team will travel to Methodist University beginning on Thursday for the USA South Baseball Championship Series.
Game one of the series will be held on Thursday at 5:00 pm. The Pride are in their first championship series since 2019. Greensboro came into the tournament as the #2 seed while the Monarchs are the #1 seed.
Greensboro hosted the first round of the tournament in the Greensboro bracket, and defeated Pfeiffer on Thursday and Brevard twice on Friday to advance into the championship series. The Pride have an overall record of 28-14-1 while Methodist comes in at 30-13.
Methodist won the USA South regular season title by half a game over Greensboro. They were also recognized with multiple postseason awards, as head coach Tom Austin was named USA South Coach of the Year, while the Monarchs also had the pitcher and rookie pitcher of the year winners.Â
Both teams come in playing well, as the Pride are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games while Methodist is 8-2. In the regular season, the Monarchs took two out of three games in a series on March 22nd-23rd.
One advantage Methodist has had all year is their pitching, as they lead the conference in ERA at 4.58. Greensboro comes in with the best offense in the conference, however, with a robust team batting average of .342. The Pride also lead the conference in home runs with 38.
Greensboro head coach
Chris Fenisey says of his team heading into the series, "I'm extremely proud of this group and excited to watch them go out and compete this weekend."
Recently, Greensboro has gotten solid starting pitching that has helped propel them to six straight wins coming into this week's games. Frshman
Zack Bird, who has been named USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Week twice this season, has been a key part of the rotation in the second half of the year. Senior
Nick Stegura has settled in as the #2 starter, while bullpen arms such as
Hunter Anderson,
Stephen Dunlow, and
Michael Richards, among others, have pitched key innings for the Pride recently.
