Defense Shines as Pride Volleyball Takes Down Southern Virginia 3-1

Greensboro, NC - In an important USA South Conference match-up, the Greensboro volleyball team defeated Southern Virginia 3-1 on Wednesday in what was a strong defensive effort for the Pride. Greensboro also snapped the Knights' 11 game win streak.

The Knights were able to take the first set 25-17 as they looked strong early. After the first set, the Pride took over thanks to strong defense and great serving. In set two, Greensboro won 25-16 as the Pride found their groove.

They then took the third set 25-17 to take a 2-1 advantage. In the fourth set, Greensboro got out to a 23-17 lead before SVU got back into the match with three straight points. The Pride stopped momentum, however, and closed the set out with a win.

The Knights had 13 service errors on the night, which proved to be a key factor in the game. Greensboro had 9 service aces, dominating serve-receive from the second set onward. Kelci Brooks led the Pride with 10 kills while Taylor Cotie had 9. Cotie also had 2 blocks.

Morgan Mayfield anchored the defense with 30 digs. Krista Brantley and Grace Young had 16 digs each, while setter Jaylyn Templeton had 36 assists on the night.

A big milestone was achieved as well, as head coach Kevin Troup earned his 100th victory as Greensboro volleyball's head coach. Troup said after the game, "In 2018 when I was hired, we had 9 players on the team and went 4-23, I thought it was going to be a battle and a journey, but happy I stuck with it. I love these young ladies, they fight day in and day out for each other. One of our words is relentless pursuit, and they have relentless pursuit after every ball. They desire to not let it touch on our side."

Greensboro travels to Methodist on Saturday for their second match of the season with the Monarchs. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
