Volleyball Wins 5 Set Thriller Over Methodist; Mayfield Picks Up 1,000th Career Dig

Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro volleyball team took on Methodist in a big USA South Conference match on Saturday, and the Pride came out on top 3-2 in five sets.

Greensboro came out firing in the first set, winning 25-11. The Pride had 11 kills as a team in the set and dominated from start to finish. The second set saw the Monarchs come alive and tie the match with a 25-23 victory.

Methodist would control the third set and take charge of the match. The Monarchs had 17 kills in the set and they looked to put Greensboro away in set number four.

In a back-and-forth battle that saw Greensboro come from behind late, the fourth set went the Pride's way 25-23 to force a decisive fifth set. In the final set, Greensboro led early before Methodist tied the Pride 6-6. Greensboro then won the next two points to take an 8-6 advantage. With the set tied 9-9, Greensboro went on a 6-3 run the end the match and take the win.

Junior Kelci Brooks had a team high 19 kills, while Taylor Cotie had 12. Karla del Castillo had a big performance, totaling 12 kills and 3 blocks. Sophomore libero Morgan Mayfield had 23 digs on the game, and surpassed the 1,000 career dig mark in her career.

Brooks came through with 16 digs while Jaylyn Templeton had 12. Templeton also had a season high 53 assists.

After the game, head coach Kevin Troup said of the team's performance, "I'm so proud of the team and how they played this week. We've worked really hard in practice with each position group to make slight changes here and there and to see the ladies execute what we've worked on is pretty fun as a coach."

On Mayfield's 1,000 career dig accomplishment, Troup said, "Morgan is an amazing player and it's no surprise that she's reached the 1,000 dig milestone. She works so hard and is constantly fine tuning her technique. Teams try to hit away from Mo, but somehow she finds a way to make plays defensively."

The Pride will play again on October 17th when they host Salem College at 7:00 pm inside Hanes Gym.
