Football Comes Up Short In Conference Opener

Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Football team returned home on Saturday afternoon open their conference slate against Maryville College. The Greensboro College campus would be abuzz as the 2022 Hall of Fame Inductions and Homecoming festivities would highlight the busy weekend. As for the football game, Head Coach Tyler Card and his Pride squad would be looking for their first win of the season.

The Scots would strike first in the 1st quarter with a 14-play drive that resulted in a touchdown. The Pride would put their own drive together and would answer with a 21-yard field goal by Marano Collins that would put the Pride on the board. The key play was a nifty 24-yard throw and catch from David Loughry II to Tegan Griggs plus an additional 15 yards for a face masking infraction on the Scots. The Pride defense would then stiffen and force a punt. However, a turnover in Pride territory would result in a Scots touchdown drive to put them ahead 13-3. A short series for the Pride and a poor punt would give the Scots a short field and they would capitalize quickly to jump to a 20-3 advantage as the quarter would come to an end.

The Scots would take the ball back at the 12:16 mark left until halftime and would begin a backbreaking drive from their own 7-yard line. The methodical drive would take 12 plays and over 6 minutes off the clock as they would score a touchdown to stretch the lead to 27-3. There would be no more scoring the remainder of the half.

The second half would start well for the Pride as a blocked punt by Tyler Alston would put the Pride in business at the Maryville 24-yard line with an excellent chance to tighten the game score. And tighten they did as Loughry found Da'Shaun Wallace on a third and goal for a touchdown on a nice slant route in the endzone. Momentum was now on the Pride's side and after Jaden Coleman stopped the Scots' runner on a 4th and 3 run play the home team was back in business from close to midfield with 8:19 remaining in the 3rd quarter. With their confidence growing, the Pride would commit the game changing mistake that would result in a 50 yard interception return for a score and the Scots would push the lead to 34-10. With that play the game would be over for all intents and purposes. The Scots would add another field goal before the quarter ended to push their lead to 37-10 with 15:00 left to play.

The Scots would begin emptying their bench and a Christian Burgess 3-yard touchdown run with 5:08 remaining in the contest would be the final scoring of the day as the Pride would drop to 0 and 4 on the season.

Head Coach Tyler Card had these thoughts on the afternoon: "We are closing the gap. We need to find a way to put two halves together in a game. We were better with penalties, now we need to cut out the turnovers on offense and find some more defense. We have to stay excited and hungry this week. We have a road game and they are coming off a bye week. We need to start fast and finish strong."

The Greensboro College Football team will play at Brevard College on Saturday, October 1st at 2:00PM.
