Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Football team were bound and determined to find their first win of the season on Friday night in Brevard, North Carolina.
A game originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, was moved a day earlier as both teams were working diligently to find the safest and best path to get this USA South Athletic Conference game in the books. Not only were the Pride looking to secure a victory, but the Tornados were also looking for their first win after facing a difficult schedule to begin the 2022 campaign.
Thankfully, the heavy rains would stay away and temperatures at the higher elevation remained manageable throughout the game. Brevard would have the ball first and long drive would be stopped by an aggressive Pride red zone defense to force a field goal attempt that would sail left of the goal post. The Pride would have some offensive difficulties stringing drives together but would only trail by seven at the end of the first quarter.
As in games past, the Pride would face a quarter throughout their games that would cost them dearly. In this case, the second quarter would be the culprit as the Tornados' offense would score touchdowns on three and the four possessions. The last-minute touchdown before the half was a backbreaker as the Pride would find themselves down 28-0 at the break.
The second half would begin with an exchange of punts, with the Pride getting the ball on their own 35 with 12:38 remaining in the third stanza.
David Loughry II would then complete a trio of 3rd down completions including a 22 yard to
Cale Matthews, another 15 yarder to Matthews, and an 11 yarder to
Da'Shaun Wallace would bring the ball inside the Brevard 10-yard line. Eventually
Christian Burgess would score from 2 yards out, to cut the lead to 28-7. A Tornado field goal would push the lead to 31-7 before the Pride would again be looking to add points.
While starting at their own 33, a pair of Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties on the Tornados would place the ball at their own 35. The combination of Loughry II and Matthews would again slice the Tornados defense on a 35-yard touchdown pass to carve the lead to 31-13 with a full quarter to play.
Unfortunately, for the Pride the fourth quarter would end scoreless and the 31-13 would be your final.
Greensboro Head Coach
Tyler Card had these comments post-game: "We need to string our successes together and finish drives on offense. The first half we had a few opportunities for big plays but could not connect. Drops and turnovers have plagued us on offense this year and it needs to stop. Defense is playing hard, but we had several key players out this week due to illness and some young guys stepped up. Our consistency needs to improve on both sides of the ball for us to get over this hump."
The Greensboro College Football team will next compete on Saturday, October 8th at noon, as they battle Southern Virginia University at Pride Field.
