Pride Stumbles Against Cougars

GREENSBORO, NC.
The Greensboro College men's basketball team fell 70-59 to Averett University in a midweek conference contest Wednesday night (Jan. 19) at Hanes Gymnasium.  With the loss, the Pride now stands at 6-8 on the season.

The Pride had several bright spots, including the play of Freshman Christian Thompson.  Thompson grabbed four rebounds and went 3-3 from the field in 17 minutes played.  Also, Greensboro was led by Senior Guard Ty Hill, who answered the call with 12 points and four rebounds. Senior Greyson Collins also reached double figures with 10 points, but it was not enough to overcome a stingy Cougar defense.  Averett held Greensboro to 35% field goal percentage, as well as limiting the Pride to 4-19 from three point range.

After a back and forth first half, the Pride trailed 32-26 at the break.  Greensboro was able to claw back into the game just one minute into the second half, cutting the Averett lead to 32-31.  The Pride's Kevon Meertins hit a clutch 3-point jumper at the 19:04 mark in the second half to bring Greensboro back within striking distance, but Averett was quick to respond.  The Cougars answered with an 18-5 scoring run from the under 12 minute timeout until the under 8 minute timeout, which extended the Cougar lead back into double digits.  A combination of going cold on the offensive end, as well as an inability to get consistent stops ultimately proved the difference in the game.

The Cougars were led by Sophomore Forward Jason Sellars II with a 17 point, 11 rebound effort and Freshman Guard Jem Lowrance also contributed 15 points and 7 rebounds.

The Pride looks to bounce back, traveling to Rocky Mount, NC for a Saturday (Jan. 22) contest at North Carolina Wesleyan College. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
