The Greensboro College volleyball team wrapped up its time at the Emory University Invitational as it split its final two matches. The Pride fell to Emory 3-0 before defeating LaGrange, 3-1.
Emory 3, Greensboro 0
The Pride scored the first point of the match with a kill from Haley Stout. Unfortunately, it was the last time Greensboro held the advantage as Emory rattled off six-straight points.
Greensboro won three of the next five points before the Eagles claimed 17 of the final 21 points to win the first set, 25-8.
In the second, Emory claimed the first nine points. The Pride fought through the set and pulled within seven (23-16). The Eagles won the final two points to take a 2-0 lead.
Emory kept the attack going as it won the first four points. The two squads exchanged points before the Eagles extended their lead to six (10-4).Â
Greensboro kept the difference within single digits and thanks to back-to-back serving aces from
Sarah Oakes, the team was within two (23-21). However, Emory won the final two points to win the set (25-21) and the match (3-0).
Greensboro 3, LaGrange 1
The Pride opened the second match of the day with an ace from
Mckenzie Norris and a kill from
Abey Hancock. LaGrange responded by winning the next three points.Â
The Panthers 3-2 lead did not last long as Greensboro won five-consecutive points led by
Hailey Stout who had three aces and a kill.Â
Both teams exchanged points as the Pride was able to hold on to a five-point lead (18-13). LaGrange evened the set at 18 and then at 20.
Greensboro won the next two points to take a 22-20 edge and eventually closed out the set, 25-22, on another Stout ace.
The second set saw the Panthers claim an early 5-3 lead. Either side went back and forth with the lead until the Pride won six of the next seven points and led 13-9.
Greensboro did not surrender the lead throughout the set as an Oakes kill sealed the 25-17 win.
The story was similar in the third as it was in the second as LaGrange held a a 5-4 lead. The lead then see-sawed between both sides of the court.
Trailing 18-17, the Pride won five of the next six. The Panther narrowed the difference to two (23-21) before rattling off four-straight to win the set 25-23.
Greensboro flipped the script in the fourth as it grabbed a 7-5 advantage. The Pride kept adding to their lead as the difference grew to eight (18-10).Â
LaGrange tried to chip away but was unable to do so as Greensboro won the set (25-18) and the match 3-1).
Stout, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the team on the day with 17 kills and added 14 digs. Oakes contributed 14 kills as
Lauren Kunke led the defense with 26 digs.Â
Greensboro (1-2) travels to crosstown rival Guilford College on Wednesday, September 8. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
