Despite standout performances from David Loughry II and Shy'heem Clemons, Greensboro College fell to Gallaudet University in a seven-point thriller, 49-42.
Loughry threw for 407 yards, fourth most in school history, and five touchdowns on 24 completions. Clemons caught three passes for 125 yards and two scores as he totaled over 288 yards on the day.
Both squads exchanged drives to begin the game as Greensboro (0-3) looked to get the first points on the board. Unfortunately,
Zach Allman's 28-yard field goal attempt missed to the left.
After taking over on its own 20, Gallaudet (2-0) used three plays to find the endzone, including rushes of 30 and 41 yards. The Bison led 7-0 at the 2:05 mark in the first.
The visitors held the lead until 11:25 in the second when it took over possession near midfield after a special teams miscue.
Gallaudet covered 51 yards in five plays and got another rushing score to double its lead with 8:46 to go in the first half.
On the ensuing kickoff, Clemons received the ball on his own one and returned it 69 yards to the Bison 30 to set up a short field for the offense.
After a short rush from
Shawn Cardwell, Loughry found
Cale Matthews over the middle of the field. After putting the defender in the spin cycle, Matthews raced to the endzone for the first Pride score of the afternoon.
Gallaudet wasted no time on its next drive as Timel Benton found Marc Wallace Jr. on the second play for an 82-yard touchdown to regain a 14-point advantage (21-7).
The Pride went for it on fourth and two during their next drive but were unsuccessful. Both teams then exchanged punts when the Bison took over with 1:13 to go in the half. Benton completed two of his next three passes to put his team at the Greensboro 10.
Gallaudet's D'Mitri Lofton scored on the very next play to increase his team's lead to 28-7. Greensboro ran one play before the horn sounded to end the half as it trailed by 21.
In the second half, the Pride forced a Bison punt on the visitor's opening drive. After several completions and rushes by Loughry, the senior quarterback found Clemons streaking down the left sideline for a 40-yard touchdown.
Trailing by 14 (28-14), the Greensboro defense stood tall and forced a three-and-out to get the ball back to its offense.
After three-straight
Jaylin Bolden carries, the Pride pulled a trick out of the playbook. Greensboro used a flea flicker play as Loughry connected with Clemons once more for the score, this time for 35 yards. The Pride trailed 28-21 at the 4:58 mark of the third.
The Bison quickly responded as they went 65 yards in three plays in 45 seconds to regain a 14-point edge (35-21).
A three-and-out by Greensboro setup Gallaudet at its own 28. Despite the first play gaining no yards, the Bison connected on a 72-yard pass to double up the Pride, 42-21.
On their next drive, the Pride were methodical as they used 12 plays to cover 75 yards capped off by a
Ryan Buchanan 10-yard touchdown reception to bring the green and white within 14 (42-28).
At this point, the teams began to exchange scores as Gallaudet answered on its ensuing possession. The Bison took 3:29 off the clock as they went 67 yards in six plays to lead 49-28.
Greensboro began its next drive with 9:14 to go in regulation. Clemons ran for gains of 11, 9 and 13 yards before Loughry found Griggs in the left front corner of the endzone to cut the deficit back to 14, 49-35.
Gallaudet looked to respond but found itself facing a fourth-and-two trying to secure the win. On a quarterback keeper,
Austin Longworth and
Shawn King found their way into the backfield and stopped the Bison in their tracks.
The Pride began the ball on the Gallaudet 41 and found themselves on the 17 after three plays. Loughry looked to the endzone but was intercepted, however, the play was called back on a pass interference by the Bison.
After no gain on the first rush, Bolden punched in the score to pull Greensboro within seven, 49-42.
Despite not recovering the onside kick, the Pride forced a punt. Unfortunately, Gallaudet executed the play perfectly and pinned Greensboro at its own two-yardline.
On the first play of the drive, Loughry found
Zach Atkinson for a 37-yard gain. That was where the Pride saw their drive stall. Four-straight incompletions gave the ball back to Gallaudet. After a kneel down on the first play, the final horn sounded as Gallaudet won 49-42.
The Bison outrushed (362-88) and outgained the Pride (627-495) on the afternoon.
Dejuan Robinson led the defense with 11 total tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.Â
Prior to the game, classmates and family of William "Ricky" Brigman dedicated the group of plantings behind the goal post on McGee in his memory and they are calling the area "Ricky's Skybox".
