The Greensboro College volleyball team took part in the Maroon Classic in Salem, Virginia. The Pride swept as they defeated Ferrum, 3-0, and Randolph, 3-2.
Greensboro 3, Ferrum 0
Greensboro used three-straight kills to open the match. Ferrum slowly chipped away and tied the set at six.
The Pride won seven-straight points led by two aces from
Carly Uhlir and two kills from
Natalie Rosinski.
The Panthers struggled to find their back into the set as Greensboro held a lead of at least five points. GC won the set 25-17.
The second set was similar to the first with the Pride grabbing an early 6-1 lead. Ferrum pulled within two but Greensboro won 11 of the next 13 points to lead by 11 (20-9).
The Panthers slowly clawed back into the set but the deficit was too great as the Pride went on to take a 2-0 lead, winning the set 25-18.
The third set was a carbon copy for Greensboro as it used a nine-point run in the middle of the set to win 25-12 and sweep the match.
Uhlir finished the match with a double-double, collecting 12 kills and 11 digs.
Sarah Oakes added 10 kills while
Mckenzie Norris had 29 assists.
Greensboro 3, Randolph 2
In the opening set of the second match, it was the battle of runs as the Pride took an 11-9 edge.
Randolph followed up as it won eight of the next nine points to gain a 17-12 lead. Greensboro cut the deficit down to two points (21-19) before the Wildcats won four of the last five points to win the set, 25-20.
The Pride grabbed a 5-3 lead to open the second set. Randolph responded by winning the next four points to lead by two (7-5).
Greensboro had an answer of its own as it won 10 of the following 13 points as it held a 15-10 edge.
The Wildcats had a difficult time trying to close the difference as
Katrina O'Neill won the set for the Pride with a kill, 25-21.
Randolph took control of the third set as it won the first eight points. Greensboro tried to cut the deficit but was only able to pull within six. The Wildcats ultimately won the set, 25-17.
The Pride returned to their form as they held a 9-4 lead to open the third.
Randolph tried to use multiple, short runs to cut into the lead. However, Greensboro kept a minimum four-point lead and forced a fifth set.
In the tie-breaker, the Wildcats held an early advantage (7-5). The Pride responded as they won eight-consecutive points to lead 13-7.
Randolph took the next three points but a service error and a kill from Norris led GC to win the set (15-11) and the match (3-2).
Uhlir had a match-high with 14 kills.
Lauren Kunke paced the defense with 26 digs as Norris tallied 48 assists.
Greensboro (4-2) will face Hollins University and Roanoke College on Saturday, September 11 to conclude the Maroon Classic. The first match starts at 12 p.m. with the second match at 4 p.m.
