The Greensboro College men's basketball team concluded its trip to the Roger Taylor Invitational as it faced St. Andrews University. The Pride used a 66-point second half to win 116-73.
St. Andrews (1-9) opened the game with an and-one play to grab the early 3-0 advantage. Greensboro (4-5) responded with five-straight to lead by two (5-3) just under a minute into the game.
The Knights evened the score and eventually regained the lead, 14-11, at the 13:52 mark of the first half. The Pride cut the deficit to one (17-16) but St. Andrews opened its lead to 23-18.
Greensboro continued to chip away at the gap and evened the score at 30 after a jumper from
Kevon Meertins with 7:41 remaining on the clock. The Pride then used a 12-2 run to hold a 10-point lead (42-32) as
Keyshawn Dorsey hit two three-point shots during the stretch.
The Knights brought the score within single-digits multiple times including a three-pointer with 32 seconds left in the first half. However, Greensboro led 50-42 as both teams headed to their respective locker rooms.
In the second half, St. Andrews scored the first bucket but the Pride had other ideas. GC went on a 20-2 run as Meertins scored 10 of the 20 to give Greensboro a 70-46 lead with 15:48 to go in regulation.
The Knights tried to cut into the deficit but the Pride used another run (14-0) to open a 35-point (84-49) advantage near the midway point of the second. Greensboro never looked back and cruised to a 43-point victory.Â
Four members of the Pride scored in double-digits as Collins led the way with a game-high 22 points. Meertins (21), Matthew Brown (19) and Josh McQuinn (10) rounded out the leading scores for GC.
The Pride shot 56.7-percent from the field and made 24 of their 26 attempts at the free throw line. GC out rebounded the St. Andrews by 16 (46-30) and were assisted by 54 points off the bench.
Greensboro hosts Regent University on Thursday, December 9 at Hanes Gymnasium. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
