Meertins has Career Day Against Mary Baldwin

The Greensboro College men's basketball team faced Mary Baldwin University in a USA South Athletic Conference showdown. Behind the efforts of Kevon Meertins, the Pride defeated the Fighting Squirrels, 84-75.

After an even battle in the first half, Greensboro's Matthew Brown gave his team a two-point edge (35-33). Both team's exchanged makes until Greensboro (6-5, 1-1) went on an 8-0 run to lead 45-37 just over four minutes into the second half.

Mary Baldwin (1-7, 1-1) slowly worked away the difference and pulled within four and eventually cut it down to one (59-58) at the 8:35 mark.

A three by Keyshawn Dorsey opened the lead back to four and from there the Pride slowly grew the lead. Over the final eight minutes, GC out scored the Fighting Squirrels 25-17 as GC made six of its eight free throw attempts.

Meertins and Dorsey led the Pride as they scored 10 and 9 points, respectively, over that time. GC went on to win by nine, 84-75.

Back in the first half, it was Greensboro that jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Mary Baldwin tried to cut into the deficit but the Pride extended their lead to 10 (14-4) with 15:21 to go in the first.

The Fighting Squirrels then went on a 17-0 behind Tyler Thomas to jump out to a 21-14 lead with 8:35 on the clock.

Both teams exchanged baskets until Greensboro went on a run of its own. The Pride out scored the visitors 12-3 over three minutes to regain the lead, 31-28. MBU took the lead back after a layup and three-point shot but two late free throws by Brown tied the game at 33 at the break.

Meertins finished the day with a career-high 29 points, going 10-17 from the field and 5-7 from the line. Greyson Collins added 13 points while Brown finished the day with nine points and 13 rebounds.

GC shot 42-percent from the field while going 70.8-percent from the charity stripe.

Greensboro sets its eyes to the 2022 portion of its schedule when it faces South Carolina State University on Sunday, January 2. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
