Double-Digit Deficit Proves Too Much for Pride

The Greensboro College men's basketball team wrapped up its two-day trip in Virginia against Regent University. The Pride trailed for a majority of the game and fell to the Royals, 58-55.

Midway through the second half, Greensboro (0-2) was trailing by 10 (49-39). Back-to-back layups from Cassius Gary and Ty Hill brought the Pride within six. After Regent (1-1) extended the lead back to eight, GC scored eight-straight points with Greyson Collins counting for six of them as the Pride was down 51-49 with 4:41 to go in regulation.

Both teams exchanged buckets as the Royals eventually regained a five-point advantage (56-51). Collins made two free throws followed by a layup to pull Greensboro within one. Regent's Andrew Aiken made two free throws with 40 seconds on the clock. Matthew Brown attempted to tie the game and send it to overtime but the shot did not go as the Pride fell by three (58-55).

Collins led all scorers with 20 points as Hill and Kevon Meertins each tallied 10 points. Randolph Holland led Regent with 16 points as Stanley Adjei contributed 12 points.

In the first half, Meertins opened the scoring for either team. Both teams exchanged the lead until the 9:09 mark in the half. The Royals made consecutive three-point shots and a layup to lead 24-14 with 7:47 on the clock.

Greensboro cut the deficit to seven at different occasions but ultimately trailed by nine (32-23) at the half.

Regent held edge in field goal percentage (40.8-35.7), three-point percentage (50-17.6) and bench points (18-7). The Pride outrebounded the Royals (29-27) and forced 18 turnovers with 10 steals.

Greensboro opens the home schedule on Wednesday, November 10 against Randolph College. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
