BREVARD, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team swept their three-game USA South Athletic Conference series against the Tornados of Brevard College after winning both games of the doubleheader Saturday.
Greensboro coasted to a 16-7 victory in Game 1 before holding on late to win the series finale 12-9.
Game One
Greensboro took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after
Scotty McGuire scored on a wild pitch before
Tim Osborne singled to right field to score
Derek Jaar from second.
The Pride then began to break the game wide open with a seven-run top half of the third inning to extend their lead to 9-0 before Brevard scored four runs over the next two inning to pull within five runs.
In the third, McGuire hit a two-run home run over the left field wall, while
Lincoln Hewett,
Blake Bond, and
Jacob Rodriguez combined for five RBIs.
After Brevard pulled to within five, Greensboro was able to strike for four more runs in the fifth inning as
Tyler Price plated Bond with a single to center field before Hewett hit a triple to center field, scoring Pride and Rodriquez, to make the score 12-4.
However, Greensboro was not done there as they outscored the Tornados 4-3 over the final four innings to secure the nine-run victory.
McGuire finished the game with a game-high three hits, while Hewett, Jaar, Osborne, and Rodriguez each had two hits.
Eli Moravick pitched the first seven innings of the game to earn his second win of the season, while
Tyler Watson and
Chenzo Scanio combined to finish the final two innings.
Game Two
Brevard jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Greensboro scored six runs over the next two innings to take a 6-2 lead into the bottom half of the third.
Pride, Curtis, Osborne, and Rodriguez each had RBIs during the run.
Brevard then pulled to within two in the inning but Greensboro was able to get both runs back after scoring one run in the fourth and fifth innings.
After the Tornados scored one run in the bottom half of the sixth inning to pull back to within three runs, Greensboro was able to tack on four more runs in the ninth before going on to win by the three-run margin after Brevard also struck for four runs in the ninth.
Rodriguez finished with a team-leading four hits in the win, while Christian Slater was credited with the win on the mound.
