GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team split a USA South Athletic Conference doubleheader with the Pacers of William Peace University Wednesday.
The Pride took the opening game by a 9-8 score before dropping the finale 6-5.
Game One
William Peace jumped on top 4-0 in the top half of the first inning before Greensboro sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom half and was able to score five runs to take a one-run lead.
Greensboro got their first run of the inning on a Pacers wild pitch before
Hanna Stackhouse hit a RBI double to right field to make the score 4-2.
Following the Stackhouse double,
Cassie Collins hit a RBI double of her own before coming across the plate to tie the game at four on a
Courtney Fink single to center field.
Greensboro did not stop there in the inning as
Jordan Deaton gave Greensboro the lead with an infield single to score Fink.
The Pride then took their one-run lead into the bottom half of the second inning before Deaton extended the lead to 9-4 with a grand slam to deep center field.
With Greensboro leading by the five-run margin, the Pacers got a two RBI home run in the sixth and seventh innings to pull to within one before
Maddy Wetherholt retired the side to preserve the victory.
The Pride pounded out 13 hits in the win as Collins and
Allyson Loy each had three hits. Wetherholt pitched a complete game and recorded her eighth victory of the season.
Game Two
Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Loy scored from second base on a double to right center field by
Daisy Martin.
However, the Pacers were able to tie the game in the fifth inning before Greensboro responded back once again in the bottom half with three runs to regain the lead at 4-1.
Greensboro got the first two runs on a pair of Pacers miscues before Collins plated
Caroline Stanley with a single to center field.
Despite holding on to the three-run lead, William Peace scored five runs over the next two innings to take a 6-4 lead into the bottom half of the seventh inning.
In the inning, Greensboro was able to score one run on a wild pitch to pull within one but could not push the tying run across.
Stanley and Martin each had two hits in the game as the Pride out hit the Pacers 10-8.
Cheyanne Cox pitched into the seventh inning but was credited with the loss.
