GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team rebounded from Tuesday's loss to Virginia Wesleyan with a come from behind victory over the Quakers of Guilford College Wednesday, 9-8.
Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Jimmy Short came across the plate on a
Tyler Price sacrifice fly to right field.
The Pride then extended their lead to 3-0 in the top half of the third inning before the Quakers stormed back to take a 5-3 lead with a five-run bottom half.
However, Greensboro quickly responded to tie the game in the fourth inning as
Blake Carroll and
Lincoln Hewett hit back-to-back RBI doubles.
Following the two-run fourth, the Quakers were able to regain a one-run lead in the fifth inning before extending their lead to 8-2 with two more runs in the sixth.
Despite facing a three-run deficit with just three innings to play, Greensboro responded back in the eighth inning with four runs to secure the victory.
Scotty McGuire and
Cameron Peters each had RBI groundouts in the inning, while Carroll tallied another RBI double.
"I have pushed this group and challenged them consistently and they always answer the call, and that is what they did today," head coach
Frank Maldonado said. "They fought back after being down three late in the game and found a way to win."
Carroll finished with a team leading three hits and two RBI, while Short, Hewett,
Blake Glass,
Dillon Cox and
Hunter Curtis each had one hit. Pitching wise,
Joseph Hoelle was credited with the win after pitching the final 1 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball.
Cameron Whitson started the game before giving way to
Eli Moravick,
Lee Sells and
Christian Kercado.
The Pride will return to action Friday when they open a three-game conference set with the Monarchs of Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow
