GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team secured a USA South Athletic Conference series win over the Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College in a doubleheader split Saturday.
The Pride scorched the Bishops 13-0 in Game 1 before dropping the nightcap, 6-1.
Game one
After neither team was able to get on the board in the first inning, the Pride broke the game wide open with a seven-run second inning and did not look back.
Blake Glass and
Brady Dignan notched RBI singles to load the bases for
Blake Carroll.
Carroll then quickly cleared the base paths with a three RBI double to left center field before coming in to score on a
Hunter Curtis single to left.
With the Pride leading 6-0, Greensboro got their final run of the inning on a
Tyler Price sacrifice fly.
Greensboro then added four more runs in the third inning before capping off the 13-run victory with two more runs in the fifth. Carroll hit another double in the third inning, plating two runs, while
Jimmy Short also had two RBI with a single to left field.
Piero Amador earned the victory after striking out four batters over seven innings, while only allowing four hits. Carroll finished with a game-high five RBI, while going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Short, Curtis and Price had two RBI each.
"Piero had a very good day on the mound and was very fortunate with the run support that he was given," Head Coach
Frank Maldonado said. "The guys had a good game plan and didn't waiver from it."
Game two
With the game scoreless heading into the seventh inning, the Bishops struck first with one-run before extending their lead to 5-0, following a four-run top half of the eighth inning.
However, Greensboro was able to get one run back in the bottom half when
Scotty McGuire came across the plate on a
Jacob Rodriguez groundout.
The Pride tried to battle back but was unable to push another run across, falling 6-1 after N.C. Wesleyan added one final run in the ninth.
Tyler Garam was credited with the loos despite pitching a strong 7 2/3 innings.
"Tyler did a great job on the mound in game two, but he unfortunately did not get the run support needed to close out the day," Maldonado added.
"It is great to get a conference series win as we have played a lot of baseball in the last two weeks. It will be nice to have a day off tomorrow and get back to work on Monday."
The Pride will return to action Tuesday when they host Hamilton College in a non-conference doubleheader, starting at 12 p.m. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow
