GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men's basketball team opened the season with an exhibition game defeat against the cross town North Carolina A&T Aggies, 67-50.
With both teams playing in their first competitive contests of the season, the shooting was a little cold to start the game.
Alvin Cunningham Jr. scored the opening points to the Pride's new 2016-17 season before
Joseph Gatling followed it up with a long three, giving the Pride an early 5-3 lead.
The Aggies and the Pride would trade baskets back and forth leading into the halftime break. However, A&T held a slight edge, 25-21.
Out from the break, the Aggies kept the lead despite the Pride hanging around for most of the half. North Carolina A&T then stretched the lead late to make the final score 67-50.
Cunningham Jr. scored a team-high 13 points, while grabbing six rebounds.
Darus Maddox added nine points and four rebounds, while Gatling and
Lorenzo Marry added six points each.
Both teams had a lot of help off of the bench as the teams tied in bench points with 24.
"I thought our effort tonight was good," Head Coach
Bryan Galuski said, "I thought we had good minutes in the first half, along with in the second half, but we just weren't consistent enough tonight to win.
"Its natural at this time of the year. We have ten returning guys and eight new guys trying to jell and get on the same page. It was a good test for us early on in the year. We had some bright spots along with some spots we need to work on but the energy was there, the enthusiasm was there, we just didn't play 40 minutes of consistent basketball. We have 48 hours to grow when we play for real against Guilford College in the Coliseum. Proud of my guys tonight with their effort."
The Pride are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 15
, when they face cross town rival Guilford College in the Coliseum at 7 p.m. For more information on Greensboro College men's basketball, continue to follow
