Volleyball Takes Down Salem in Non-Conference Action

SALEM, VA. — Greensboro College volleyball (8-1) defeated Salem College (6-2) 3-1 on Saturday, winning 25-16, 28-26, 21-25, 25-22. Greensboro finished with 64 kills and a .251 hitting percentage, while Salem (NC) had 57 kills and hit .176. The match was a non-conference game against the USA South opponent.

Greensboro's attack produced 64 kills and a .251 hitting percentage, ahead of Salem (NC)'s 57 kills and .176, with Payton Shiflet recording 19 kills and Abigail Leo adding 16 kills without an attack error. Shiflet's performance surpassed her season average of 8.0 kills. Greensboro also finished with nine service aces, reaching a milestone of 105 serve aces for the season. Salem (NC) held a narrow dig advantage, 103-99, with Greensboro reaching a season high of 99 digs. Morgan Mayfield contributed significantly with 30 digs, exceeding her season average of 15.0. Grace Young also surpassed her season average of 6.88 digs, finishing with 15. Both teams totaled six blocks. In the tight second set, Greensboro moved from an 11-13 deficit to a 16-14 lead and later converted set point at 28-26.

The opening set began with Greensboro scoring the first three points, starting with a Young service ace before Leo added a block assist and a kill from Emory Johnson. Mayfield later served back-to-back aces as Greensboro moved to 11-5, and Greensboro kept Salem (NC) from getting closer than three points the rest of the set. Payton Wright served the final three points, with kills by Leo and Shiflet preceding a Skylar Rokov-Leo block on set point for a 25-16 finish.

In the second set, Greensboro turned a 13-11 deficit into a 16-14 lead, getting kills from Wright, Leo, Shiflet, and Rokov during the stretch. After Salem (NC) tied the set at 26-26, a Salem service error gave Greensboro set point, and Leo closed the 28-26 set with a kill from Johnson.

A 16-8 deficit in the third set preceded an Enjoli Allen kill and a Madison Bozarth service stretch that helped bring Greensboro within 16-12. Leo later added a kill to get Greensboro within 21-18, and Shiflet answered a set-point chance with a kill at 24-21. Salem (NC) took the final point to finish the set, 25-21.

After Salem (NC) tied the fourth set at 12-12, Greensboro answered with a point on an attack error and back-to-back Mayfield service aces to move in front 15-12. Dilynn Norris, Wright, and Johnson added points as Greensboro pushed the margin to 18-14, and Shiflet finished with seven kills in the set. Leo achieved a season-high of 18 points. Greensboro closed the set 25-22 on a Salem (NC) attack error.
