GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro College volleyball (9-1, 1-0) defeated Salem College (6-3, 0-1) 3-0 on Wednesday, taking the sets 25-17, 25-22, 25-19. Greensboro hit .222 with 40 kills and 10 aces while holding Salem (NC) to a .085 hitting percentage.
After Salem (NC) moved ahead 7-6 on a Tenley McDonald kill, Greensboro won five of the next six rallies, tying the set on
Payton Wright's kill and taking an 11-7 lead with
Larkin Baxley and Wright kills before
Morgan Mayfield's ace. Salem (NC) cut the margin to 12-10, but Greensboro moved back in front 17-11 as Wright added another kill and
Payton Shiflet put down kills on three straight Greensboro points.
Dilynn Norris helped Greensboro continue the push with kills for 20-13 and 21-14 leads, Mayfield followed with another ace, and Greensboro finished the set 25-17 after Wright's late kill and a Salem (NC) attack error.
Greensboro scored the first two points, but Salem (NC) worked back in front and built a 13-8 lead with service aces by Polly Lennie and Sadie Lippard during the stretch. Shiflet had back-to-back kills and
Abigail Leo added another as Greensboro cut it to 13-11, and
Madison Bozarth's ace later brought Greensboro within 15-14 before Salem (NC) made it 16-14. Greensboro scored five of the next six points, using kills from Baxley and Wright along with a Salem (NC) attack error to move ahead 19-17. Salem (NC) tied the set at 19-19 and again at 20-20, but Greensboro answered with three straight points, reached set point on a Leo kill at 24-22 and closed the 25-22 set on a Shiflet kill from Baxley.
Grace Young served Greensboro to a 4-0 start in the third set with three aces and a Salem (NC) ball-handling error during the opening run. After Salem (NC) worked back within 8-6, Greensboro kept the lead through kills by Wright, Baxley and Norris before moving ahead 15-12. Wright had back-to-back kills around a Mayfield ace as Greensboro stretched the margin to 19-12, and Baxley added a kill for a 20-13 lead after Salem (NC) broke the run. Salem (NC) cut the score to 23-19 late, but
Skylar Rokov answered with a kill from
Emory Johnson, and
Enjoli Allen closed the set with a service ace for a 25-19 Greensboro win.
