SALEM, VA. — Greensboro College football (1-1) lost to Roanoke College (2-0) 28-14 on Saturday. Greensboro scored both touchdowns on defense, getting a 60-yard fumble recovery return and a 19-yard interception return, but was held to 175 yards of offense.
Cameron Turner surpassed 1,000 career passing yards, totaling 1,075, with 119 yards in the current game.
Greensboro's defense supplied its points in the first quarter, with
Kalil Marcus returning an interception 19 yards for a touchdown before
Jacob Cook's PAT made it 7-0. Roanoke held the ball for 9:26 and ran for 63 yards on 15 carries, while Greensboro had 29 passing yards, 18 rushing yards and two punts. Roanoke tied the game 7-7 on Linwood Johnson's 3-yard touchdown pass to Grey Deal and Ethan Cyr's PAT.
Roanoke outscored Greensboro 21-0 in the second quarter, with Linwood Johnson completing 4 of 5 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns while also adding an 8-yard rushing touchdown. Greensboro was held to 19 passing yards and seven rushing yards in the quarter, went 0-for-3 on third down and allowed three sacks for 19 yards.
Camron Torrence-Kelly provided Greensboro's key conversion with a 14-yard run on fourth-and-3 at the Roanoke 43, but Roanoke carried a 28-7 lead into halftime. Greensboro has achieved at least three sacks in two consecutive games.
Greensboro had the ball for 9:41 in the third quarter and recorded six first downs, while Roanoke finished the quarter with three first downs and minus-14 rushing yards. The quarter's only points came on defense, when
Gavin Thomas forced a Jerrett Shepherd fumble and Marcus returned the recovery 60 yards for a touchdown with 8 seconds left;
Jacob Cook added the PAT to make it 28-14.
Greensboro and Roanoke went scoreless in the fourth quarter, and Roanoke finished off a 28-14 result. Greensboro produced three first downs to Roanoke's one and went 7-for-10 passing for 40 yards in the quarter, while the defense held Roanoke to minus-4 rushing yards and 0-for-3 on third down. Three Greensboro penalties for 20 yards, two sacks allowed and a late turnover on downs limited the comeback push.
Marcus recorded four tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery, returning the interception 19 yards for a touchdown and the fumble 60 yards for another score. He scored two touchdowns, achieving this milestone for the first time this season. Torrence-Kelly rushed 15 times for 79 yards and added four catches for 17 yards.
Mitrend Curry finished with team highs of five receptions and 42 receiving yards.
Jay Law posted six tackles and 1.5 sacks.
