Greensboro, NC - It was the
Jeremiah Howard show inside Hanes Gymnasium on Thursday night as the sophomore led Greensboro College Men's Basketball (8-11, 4-4) to an overtime win over Brevard (8-12, 1-8) by the score of 96-90.
It was the Tornados that got out to the hot start, taking an 18-4 advantage in the first eight minutes of the game. From there, the Pride chipped away at the Brevard lead and tied the game 21-21 just four minutes later.
After Greensboro took a 24-23 lead, Brevard quickly went back ahead and maintained their advantage the rest of the half. Brevard would then extended their lead to 8 points multiple times during the second half, but the Pride would not go away, as they eventually cut the Brevard advantage to just 1 point with 5:25 remaining.Â
The teams traded buckets the final five minutes of the second half. With 52 seconds left, the Tornados found themselves up 82-78. However, a jumper by
Nigel Chivers and then a steal by
DJ Jackson that led to a
Will Gray dunk tied the game with 15 seconds left.Â
Brevard then had two free throw attempts with 4 seconds left with a chance to win the game, but they would miss both free throws, and the teams headed to overtime. Again the teams traded baskets, but Greensboro went on a 5-2 run at the end of the overtime period to lock down the win.
Jeremiah Howard scored a career high 24 points as well as grabbing a career high 16 rebounds. Howard went 10-17 from the floor with 11 defensive rebounds and 5 offensive rebounds. Afterwards, Howard said about his performance, "I would like to thank my teammates helping me out in practice, pushing me to be more aggressive, more of a score first mentality. I want to thank my coaches also. They've been telling me I can be the most dominant player in this conference if I put my mind to it."
Freshman
Quamir Ingram scored 19 points while
DJ Jackson had 15 points and 7 rebounds. As a team, Greensboro shot 48% from the field and scored 58 points in the paint.
