Fayetteville, NC - Game one of the USA South Baseball Championship Series took place on Thursday, as Greensboro fell to Methodist 6-3.
The Pride got on the board first in inning number one after
Louis Berini scored on a wild pitch. The Monarchs scored 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning to take an early 2-1 lead.Â
Mike Rinaldi tied the game 2-2 with a solo homer to left field in teh 2nd inning, his 8th of the season. Methodist scored twice in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead, this time 4-2.
In the 5th, Greensboro got back to within a run after a Rinaldi sac-fly, but the Monarchs responded again with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 6-3.
The Pride couldn't muster anything offensively late in the game, and would fall by that same 6-3 score. At the plate, Greensboro out-hit Methodist 12-5, but couldn't capitalize with runners on base. On the mound,
Zack Bird got the start and went 2.0 innings, while
Michael Richards came out of the bullpen and pitched the rest of the way.Â
The two teams will play again on Friday, with Greensboro needing to win both games in order to capture the conference title. Game one will begin at 2:00 pm, and game two (if necessary) will begin at approximately 5:00 pm.
