Rocky Mount, NC - Greensboro Baseball inched ever so closer to earning a top two seed in the USA South Conference Tournament on Friday, as they defeated NC Wesleyan 7-3 in game one of a three game series.
Greensboro got a big start on the mound from freshman
Zack Bird. Bird went 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 1 run, and striking out 5. Bird threw 110 pitches as he earned his 3rd win of the season.
At the plate, the Pride took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning when
Michael Schroer hit a solo home run to left field. In the 5th,
Dominic Scavone hit a sac fly to make it 2-0 in favor of Greensboro.
With the score 3-1,
Evan Sykes hit a solo blast to left field for his 19th career home run. This puts him tied for 1st place on the all-time home run list in Greensboro Baseball history. Later in the 8th,
Louis Berini hit a two-run triple to open the game up.
The Bishops scored two runs in the 8th, but
Nick Neubauer shut the door in the 8th and the 9th to secure the win. With the victory, Greensboro remains in the number two slot in the USA South standings. They will have a chance to clinch home field advantage in the first round of the conference tournament on Saturday.
The Pride will play a doubleheader against the Bishops on Saturday, with game one beginning at 1:00 pm.
