Greensboro, NC - In what was an eventful first game of the series, Greensboro baseball took down William Peace 16-15 on Friday afternoon.
Shane Garrett was the walk-off hero, hitting a two run single in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game.
The Pride got out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning, but the Pacers scored five in the second to take a 6-3 advantage. They added two more in the fourth to go ahead 8-3.
Greensboro's offense found it tough to figure out the Pacers' Jack McIntosh after the first inning, and were down 9-4 after five innings. They scored one run in the sixth before scoring five runs in the seventh inning to take a 10-9 lead off the William Peace bullpen.
Later, Greensboro scored three runs in the eighth inning to take what seemed like a comfortable 13-9 advantage heading to the ninth. However, the Pacers' bats fought back and scored six runs in the top of the ninth to take a 15-13 lead.
Despite this, the Pride didn't quit, and came from behind to score three in the bottom half of the ninth to get a game one victory and move to 5-2 in conference play.Â
At the plate, the Pride totaled sixteen hts. They got a solo home run from
Mike Rinaldi (his first in a Greensboro uniform), a triple from
Myles Vacharasin, and four doubles which were hit by
Brody Gardner and
Rush Bowman. Rinaldi totaled four hits on the game while Bowman had three.
Isaiah Faudoa got the start on the mound and went four innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) with two strikeouts.
Hunter Anderson pitched a strong three innings out of the 'pen, racking up four strikeouts.Â
Louis Berini, Gardner, and
Evan Sykes, each had two hits. Greensboro also drew eight walks on the afternoon.Â
The teams will play again in games two and three on Saturday, with game one beginning at 1:00 pm.
