Greensboro, NC - In a winner take all to advance to the USA South South Conference Tournament, Greensboro men's basketball defeated Methodist 70-61 to secure the 6th and final seed.
The Pride were led once again by senior guard
Isaiah Pruett, who scored 34 points for his second straight game of at least 30 points. Greensboro also avenged a 79-61 loss to the Monarchs back on January 25th.
After a dominating performance in the paint in their first matchup, Methodist couldn't do the same in this one thanks to the performances of forwards
Grant Thompson and
Jeremiah Howard. Thompson scored 13 points with 7 rebounds and 1 block, while Howard had 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Four of those rebounds for Howard were on the offensive glass.
Greensboro shot 48% in the first half and 5-11 from long range. Although they didn't hit any three pointers and shot 38% from the floor in the second half, the Pride defense held off the Monarchs late and got key buckets from Pruett to get the win.
Another key factor for Greensboro was free throws, as they went 17-21 from the charity stripe in the second half and 19-23 for the game.
Interim head coach
Michael McDuffie said afterwards, "I'm really proud of the effort and urgency we played with today. The last 3-4 games we've done some positive things and made huge strides. We've earned an opportunity to play for a conference title and looking forward to riding this momentum into Tuesday."
Greensboro will travel to the #3 seed Southern Virginia at 5:30 on February 25th.
