Alex Vazquez's career day helped Greensboro baseball win game one of a doubleheader against Averett 12-8. Vazquez hit two homeruns and knocked in seven runs. The Pride fell in game two 11-9.
Game One: Greensboro 12, Averett 8
In game one, Averett got out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Pride came right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. In the third, Greensboro put up three runs on a three-run blast by Vazquez for his first of two homers on the game.Â
The Pride added two more runs in the fifth inning after Vazquez bunted home
Evan Sykes. The Cougars stormed back later in the game to tie the score 8-8 after a two-run sixth and a three-run seventh.
Vazquez's bat struck again in the bottom of the eighth, hitting another three-run homerun after a
Dominic Scavone sac fly to make the score 12-8. Vazquez's seven RBI in a single game is tied for second most in program history.
Stephen Dunlow slammed the door in the ninth inning to nail down the win.
Offensively,
Chris Le went 3-5 with three runs scored while
Louis Berini had a four hit game with three runs scored. Berini's four hit game was the most in a single game in his Greensboro career. On the mound,
Ian Bast got the start and went 5.1 innings, giving up ten hits, five runs, and striking out nine batters.
Game Two: Averett 11, Greensboro 9
It was an extra inning affair in game two as the Cougars would come out on top 11-9. Averett got out to a 6-0 lead after two innings thanks to a five run second inning. With two outs in the second, Averett scored all five of their runs after a two out error by the Pride defense.
Greensboro's bats came back for four runs in the bottom of the second thanks to one RBI each by
Myles Vacharasin and
Chris Le, and a two-RBI hit by
Louis Berini. Two more runs came across for the Cougars in the third frame to take a 8-4 advantage.
However, the Pride clawed their way back in it with two runs in the fourth and one run each in the fifth and seventh. After an Averett run in the ninth to go up 9-8, the Pride tied the game again on an
Alex Vazquez RBI fielder's choice.
The Cougars hit two solo homeruns in the top half of the tenth inning to go ahead 11-9 and wouldn't give up any runs in the bottom of the frame to seal the win.
Michael Richards got the start on the mound for Greensboro, going 2.1 innings and giving up three earned runs.
Hunter Anderson had a strong outing out of the bullpen by throwing 6.1 innings and giving up just one run.Â
At the plate,
Kai Hayen hit his first homerun of the year and went 2-4.
Louis Berini had a three hit game and three RBI, totaling seven hits between the two games on Saturday. Catcher
Myles Vacharasin went 1-2 with two runs scored and his first homerun of the season.
Game three of the series takes place on Sunday at 2:00 pm at McCrary Park in Asheboro.
