Staunton, VA - A road trip to Mary Baldwin resulted in a big USA South Conference win for Greensboro men's basketball on Thursday night, as they defeated the Fighting Squirrels 71-61 to complete the season sweep.
Isaiah Pruett led the Pride with 26 points on 7-15 shooting.
The first half ended with the teams tied at 25-25, as Greensboro shot 42% from the field while Mary Baldwin shot just 35%. The Fighting Squirrels did go 3-4 from the free throw line and hit two three point shots in the half. Greensboro was only able to go 1-8 from long range in half number one, and that would be the only three pointer they would make all night.
Despite the lack of three's, Greensboro's defense stepped up big by holding the sharp-shooting Fighting Squirrels 36% shooting from the floor for the game. The Pride offense got going in the second half as well, scoring 46 points while shooting 71% from the floor.Â
Greensboro shot a solid 18-22 (81%) from the free throw line in this one, while holding Mary Baldwin to 9-11 shooting from the line. Senior forward
Grant Thompson had one of his best games of the season, scoring 14 points and coming down with 11 rebounds to secure a double-double.
DJ Jackson and freshman
Jeremiah Howard scored 11 points each, while Jackson had 7 rebounds.Â
With the win, Greensboro improves to the sixth seed in the USA South standings, currently putting them in the conference tournament with three games remaining. The Pride will play again on Saturday when they host senior day at 4:00 pm against Pfeiffer.Â
