Raleigh, NC - It was a big night for sophomore
DJ Jackson, as he led the men's basketball team to a 63-61 victory over William Peace in the team's first USA South Conference game of the season.
Jackson led the Pride with 19 points, which is a new career high. He also had 4 rebounds along with going a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.
The game was close the entire way, as there were a total of 8 ties and 12 lead changes. Greensboro got out to a 20-12 advantage midway through the first half before the Pacers got back to within two points at 22-20. Near the end of the half, Ryan Lominack hit a three pointer to give William Peace a one point lead, but as time expired, Jackson hit a layup to give the Pride a one point halftime advantage.
Greensboro had as large as a seven point lead in the second half, but the Pacers didn't go away, as they took a five point lead with 6:26 to go in the game. With Greensboro down 58-57,
Griffin Powell hit a huge three point shot to give the Pride the advantage again at 60-58 with 2:04 to play. The game then came down to the final 10 seconds, when
Patrick Malott hit the game-winning layup while drawing a foul to give the Pride a 62-61 lead. Malott would hit the following free throw, and the Greensboro defense held the Pacers off in the final seconds to secure the win.
For the Pride,
Grant Thompson came through with a 12 point, 5 rebound performance while
Isaiah Pruett scored 11 points and had 4 assists. Mallott would finish with 7 points on the night.
Greensboro is scheduled to play inside Hanes Gym this Saturday as they host NC Wesleyan in another USA South Conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
