Azuria Barrino and
Nakiyah Kelly helped lead the Greensboro women's basketball team to victory over Salem on Friday 56-54 as the team earned their second USA South Conference win of the season.
The game was tight throughout as Salem held the lead for most of the afternoon. Greensboro took their first lead with 7:49 to go in the game, and there were three lead changes in the fourth quarter.
With 3:54 to play, Salem found themselves ahead 52-49, and held the lead until 29.0 seconds to play.
Nakiyah Kelly would hit a layup to give the Pride a 53-52 advantage before two
Taya Phelps free throws with 5.0 seconds left gave Greensboro a three point lead. With 1.0 second left, Salem scored to make it a one point deficit, but the Pride were able to inbound the ball on the ensuing possession and hit one more free throw to seal the 56-54 victory.
After the game, head coach
Aaron Fernandez stated, "I'm very proud of of we were able to kind of get stabilized after the first quarter and keep clawing away. It was just one of those games that wasn't always pretty but at the end of the day, a win is a win and you take it, learn from it, and build on it."
Azuria Barrino led Greensboro with 14 points, while
Nakiyah Kelly had 11 points and 11 rebounds, earning a double-double.
Taya Simpkins and
Taya Phelps added 7 points, while
Skylar Walston scored 5 points, had 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Greensboro got 21 points from their bench in this one, and scored 26 points in the paint. The team also had 16 second chance points on 14 offensive rebounds. The Pride totaled 48 rebounds and hit a season-high 5 three pointers.
Next up for Greensboro is a trip to Ferrum College on January 15th. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
