Pride Football Gets Strong Defensive Effort But Fall 14-0 to Guilford

Greensboro, NC - It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon for football at Pride Field as Greensboro football hosted the Soup Bowl against Guilford College. Despite a strong defensive effort by the Pride, the Quakers would come out on top 14-0 to open the 2024 season.

Guilford got on the board in the first quarter on a touchdown pass to running back Malik Woodard to go up 7-0. Later in the quarter, Greensboro had a chance to even the score, but fumbled at the goal line which resulted in a touchback and turnover.

Both defenses were strong throughout, as Greensboro's defense came up with two goal line stands to keep the Quakers out of the endzone. A missed field goal at the end of the first half by Greensboro kept the score 7-0 going into the break.

In the second half, the Quakers kept the ball on the ground and controlled time of possession. The Pride wouldn't be able to get in scoring range on offense in either the third or fourth quarters, which allowed Guilford to hold their 7-0 lead late into the game. On their next to last possession, the Quakers punched it in the endzone to make it 14-0 and seal the win.

For Greensboro, Max Steele led the team with 11 tackles followed by JaJuan Givens with 9. Steele and Jaden James also had one pass break-up each. Offensively, Christian Burgess led the Pride with 67 rushing yards on 13 carries. Tareek Smith would carry the ball 9 times for 34 yards.

Next Saturday, Greensboro hosts Averett University at Pride Field, with a scheduled kick-off of 12:00 pm.
