Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro football team played their second straight home game to open the season on Saturday, falling to Averett 27-20 in their last non-conference game of the season.
The Pride got out to an early 13-0 lead in this one, as
Ja'Shawn Harris caught a touchdown pass from
Jayden Morrison early in the first quarter followed by a 67 yard touchdown pass by Morrison to
Shamar Privette later on in the quarter.
Averett got on the board with a touchdown of their own with 1:39 left in the first quarter to make the score 13-6 after a missed extra point. Greensboro took that 13-6 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Averett got a touchdown reception from Shawn Watlington to bring the score to 20-12 after another missed PAT by the Cougars. Watlington had 5 receptions for 103 yards for the game.
Right after the ensuing kickoff, Morrison threw a bomb to
Deaven Hawkins for a 70 yard touchdown pass as Greensboro extended the lead to 20-12. However, the Cougars later tied the game on a touchdown pass and a successful two-point conversion.
In the fourth quarter, Morrison would throw an interception deep in Greensboro's territory that led to an Averett game-winning touchdown with 6:05 to play. The Pride couldn't get anything else going on their final two possessions in their attempt to tie the game and force overtime.
For Greensboro, Morrison went 12-33 with 255 yards and 3 touchdown passes, along with 2 interceptions.
Christian Burgess led the Pride in rushing, going for 72 yards on 15 carries. Defensively,
Jayden Law and
Max Steele led the team in tackles with 7 each.
Jaden James and
Taiseng Brown each had 1 interception.
Greensboro plays their first road contest of the year next Saturday as they travel to Methodist to take on the Monarchs for a 6:00 pm game.
