Engel Throws One Hitter, Sox Homers in Sweep of Meredith

Raleigh, NC - The Greensboro Softball team (16-8, 5-1) swept a double header against Meredith College (11-8, 2-2) on Saturday afternoon. The two victories keep the team second place in the USA South Conference standings.

Game One:

Senior Lauren Engel pitched her sixth complete game shutout of the season in game one as the Pride earned a 3-0 win. Engel gave up just one hit and struck out four in a masterful performance. She now has eleven shutouts in her career.

The offense would score three runs on eight hits to give Engel the run support she needed. Madison Dillner had a two hit performance with one RBI. Makyiah Simmons also had an RBI on a solo home run in the seventh inning. Simmons now has four homers in 2024.

Game Two:

Greensboro won game two 4-3 in come-from-behind fashion. Down 3-0 going into the seventh inning, the Pride scored four runs in the final frame to earn the sweep of the Avenging Angels.

In the seventh, M'Kenzie Davis and Madison Dillner drove in one run each to make the score 3-2. With two outs, the NCAA leader in doubles, Alexis Sox, homered to left field to take the lead 4-3. The home run was Sox's second of the year.

Lauren Engel slammed the door shut in the ninth inning to secure the win. Engel came in from the bullpen and pitched the last 2.1 innings. Engel is now 11-4 on the season. Katherine Charlton got the start in the circle and went 4.2 innings. She gave up three runs (one earned) and struck out two.

The Pride will play again on April 10th when they go on the road to Mary Baldwin for a double header beginning at 2:00 pm.
