Softball Falls to Mary Baldwin on Wednesday

Staunton, VA - Greensboro Softball (16-8, 5-3) made a trip to Staunton, Virginia on Wednesday to play Mary Baldwin (9-14, 5-5) and would drop both games of a double header. Each game ended in a 4-3 victory for the Fighting Squirrels.

Game One:

Greensboro got out to a 3-0 lead in game one before giving up four unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Anna Frazier had an RBI double in the first inning, and then Jillian Vitamanti and M'Kenzie Davis knocked in runs in the second inning to make it 3-0.

With the score 3-1 in favor of the Pride, Mary Baldwin would come back to tie the game in the fifth inning with two runs. Then in the sixth, the Fighting Squirrels scored another run to make the score 4-3. Greensboro got the tying run on base in the seventh inning, but couldn't score and fell 4-3.

Lauren Engel went six innings in the circle, giving up four runs (three earned), and struck out four batters. Ivy Ray had a two hit game, as did Jillian Vitamanti.

Game Two:

Mary Baldwin would be the ones to get out to an early lead in game two, as they scored three runs in the second inning. However the Pride would battle back as they scored one run in the fourth inning and then tied the game with two runs in the seventh inning. Madison Dillner singled home a run, and later Alexis Sox reached on an error that scored Jillian Vitamanti to tie the game 3-3.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Mary Baldwin would get a walk-off single to win the game and complete the sweep of the Pride. 

Katherine Charlton, who has won the last three USA South Rookie of the Week honors, got the start in the circle. She went 1.2 innings and gave up three runs. Raina Hampel came in relief and fired 4.1 innings and gave up zero runs. Lauren Engel would get the loss, tossing the final 0.2 innings.

The Pride tallied five hits on the game to go along with four walks.

Greensboro will host Salem College this Saturday for senior day. Game one begins at 1:00 pm.
