ROCKY MOUNT, NC- In their season opener, the Greensboro Pride men's basketball team fell to Christopher Newport University in the Roger Taylor Invitational by a 78-61 final.
Greensboro played the 5th ranked DIII men's program very tight in the first half, trailing only 41-38 at the break. But in the second half, the Pride (0-1) simply could not keep up their hot shooting from the first half (56.5%), shooting 38% from the floor over the final 20 minutes. From three point range, Greensboro was 4-of-6 in the first half, but fell to just 1-of-6 in the second half.Â
Isaiah Pruett led Greensboro with 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting, while
Ryan Roberts and
DJ Jackson both chipped in nine. The Pride committed 22 turnovers, while forcing only nine on the Captains (1-0). CNU was able to capitalize on the opportunities, converting those 22 Greensboro turnovers into 27 points.
CNU was led by Collin Hines, who dropped in 19 points off the bench, and 17 points from Toa Hollenbeck. The Captains had nearly identical performances from the floor, shooting 44.1% in the first half and 44.4% in the second.Â
For the Pride, it will be a quick turnaround as the Roger Taylor Invitational continues tomorrow. Greensboro will square off against Eastern Mennonite University, who fell to N.C. Wesleyan 80-71. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM Sunday afternoon. Greensboro then opens up their home slate on Wednesday, November 13 against Regent.
