Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro men's basketball team played cross-town rival Guilford Wednesday night inside the First Horizon Coliseum and fell 59-58 after a last second three point shot by the Pride was waved off.
Greensboro played tough against the preseason #17 team in NCAA Division III all night long. The game was back and forth the entire night as both teams swapped the lead throughout.Â
Guilford took a 35-29 lead into the halftime break after going on a 9-0 run in the last 3:39 of the half. Once again in the second half both teams battled hard and swapped the lead multiple times. In total, there were 18 lead changes in the contest.
As time wound down, Greensboro found themselves down 59-56 with 1:05 to play before
Grant Thompson hit a hook shot in the paint to make it a one point game. After a key defensive stop, Greensboro missed a three pointer that was rebounded by Guilford. However, a travel was called on the Quakers with 0.7 left on the clock that gave the Pride one last shot to win the game.Â
Zephaniah Jones then shot and made a wild three point shot off the inbound, but the shot was called off after being ruled that the ball was still in his hand when the buzzer went off.Â
Despite the loss, Greensboro got strong performances from point guard
Isaiah Pruett, who scored 20 points, and
Griffin Powell who scored 15.
Grant Thompson also scored in double figures with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Greensboro shot 8-20 form long range and 21-48 overall from the floor. They also went 8-8 from the free throw line. For the Quakers, Nick Farrar led the team with 17 points while Chase Ellis had 15.
Next up for the Pride is a home game against another ODAC opponent, Averett University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm on November 23rd inside Hanes Gymnasium.
