Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro women's basketball team earned their first win of the 2024-2025 season on Wednesday night, defeating Regent 61-33 in dominant fashion. Head coach
Aaron Fernandez also won his first game as head coach of the Pride women's basketball program.
Greensboro led after the first quarter 17-13, as the team shot 5-17 from the floor. Three of those makes were from behind the arc, two of which were from
Nataya Atwater.Â
The Pride pulled away again in the second quarter as they took a 6 point lead into the halftime break. They shot 9-29 from the floor in the first half and hit 3 three point shots.Â
The second half is where Greensboro showed their muscle and put the Royals away for good. Regent only scored 9 points in the second half, and 3 in the third quarter. The Pride outscored Regent 31-9 in half number two to cruise to the victory.
Freshman
Nakiyah Kelly and
Azuria Barrino combined for 22 points on the night, while Kelly had 10 rebounds, completing her first career double-double. Junior forward
Jasmine Mitchell scored 9 points and had 3 blocked shots.
Nataya Atwater was big defensively, coming up with a career high 5 steals.
Greensboro improves to 1-1 on the season with the win, and will take on Mid-Atlantic Christian on November 17th for their next contest. Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm inside Hanes Gymnasium.
