Despite Strong Start, Pride Football Taken Down by Belhaven 30-20

Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro football team was back on Pride Field Saturday afternoon as they hosted USA South rival Belhaven, as they looked for their second win of the season.

The Pride got off to a hot start as on their first possession, sophomore quarterback Josh Sims threw a dart across the middle of the field to Ja'Shawn Harris for a 58 yard touchdown to put Greensboro ahead 7-0. This was Sims' first career touchdown pass.

Belhaven got on the board in the second quarter to make the score 7-3. However, Greensboro would strike again at the end of the half when Tareek Smith helped lead a touchdown drive on the ground. He would eventually run one in the endzone from 5 yards out to make the score 13-3 going into the half.

The second half was a different story for the Pride, as they were outscored 27-7. Belhaven scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take the lead, and then freshman quarterback Travon Moore was intercepted by Icarius Hodgen and returned for a pick-six. A touchdown later in the fourth quarter put the win away for Belhaven.

Moore did throw his first career touchdown pass on the next-to-last possession for the Pride, as Deaven Hawkins caught a 66 yard touchdown for his second touchdown catch of the season.

Turnovers were the key in the second half, as the Greensboro quarterbacks combined to throw 3 interceptions. Tareek Smith led the Pride in rushing, as he had 25 carries for 118 yards. Smith's 118 rushing yards was a career high. Ja'Shawn Harris led Greensboro in receiving, catching 3 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Jayden Law led the Pride with 9 tackles. The Greensboro defense had a total of 7 tackles for loss led by their strong defensive line play. The defense also forced three turnovers, with Kalil Marcus and JaJuan Givens having 1 interception each and Jaden James having a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

Belhaven had 243 rushing yards on 48 carries, while Greensboro had 152 rushing yards on 32 carries. Belhaven also converted 50% of their third downs on the afternoon compared to the Pride only going 1-10 on third down.

Greensboro will hit the road next Saturday as they play LaGrange. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
