Greensboro, NC - On a chilly Wednesday night on Pride field, the Greensboro women's soccer team earned an important USA South Conference win over defending conference champion Southern Virginia 2-0.
The Pride dominated early, as both of their goals came in the first 15 minutes of play. In the 2nd minute,
Amery Skinner scored a header off a corner kick from
Shae Brennan to give Greensboro a quick 1-0 advantage. In the 13th minute, the Pride struck again when freshman
Emily Walsh scored her 4th goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Goalie
Lindsay Fox and the Greensboro defense played well as they helped shutout the Knights the rest of the way. Fox had 6 saves on the night, including multiple key efforts to keep SVU off the scoreboard.
Head coach
Mike Johnston said afterwards, "Playing against a quality opponent like SVU is super tough. They're the defending conference champs for a reason. Coming out and getting a goal early was huge...then to get the grit goal from
Emily Walsh and go up 2-0 kind of put them on their heals a little bit. In the second half our plan was just to keep them in front and keep their defenders from coming forward because they're such a dangerous team...I'd be remissed if I didn't mention
Lindsay Fox. Coming off a second ACL tear, she's been such an integral piece of our team...she's starting to play into her role and I thought she was fantastic."
Greensboro will travel to Meredith for their next contest this Saturday, with kick-off set for 2:00 pm.
