Greensboro, NC - It was an electric atmosphere inside Hanes Gymnasium Tuesday night as the Greensboro Men's Basketball team (5-8, 1-1) came from behind to defeat Southern Virginia (4-10, 1-1) 69-67. The Pride were once down 20 points in the first half before storming back for the win.
The first half saw the Knights take command, as they led 33-13 with 4:21 left to play. The Pride got good looks on the offensive end, but couldn't get their shots to fall. DJ Green led Southern Virginia in the first half, as he scored the majority of his 19 points on the night in half number one.
Greensboro came out of halftime motivated to make a run at the Knights. Senior
Matthew Brown helped lead a furious comeback that saw the Pride outscore Southern Virginia 48-30 in the second half.Â
With 3:11 to play, Greensboro took their first lead of the contest on a jump shot from
Isaiah Pruett to lead 63-62. The Knights' Koa Baker tied the game 65-65 on a clutch three point shot with just over 2 minutes to play. However,
Griffin Powell drained a three pointer to retake the lead for Greensboro.
With 38 seconds left,
Isaiah Pruett would hit a free throw to put the Pride ahead 69-67. Greensboro would lock down on defense on the final possession, and despite the Knights having the opportunity to tie or take the lead, they failed to score in the final seconds. With the win the Pride earned their first USA South Conference victory of the season.
Matthew Brown led Greensboro with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Grant Thompson had 12 points and 6 rebounds, while
Javion Majette had 10 points.
Tim Boulware also scored 7 points and pulled down 7 rebounds.
Greensboro will host Methodist University on Saturday inside Hanes Gym. Tip-off is set for 4:00 PM.
