Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Greensboro earns 20th win of the season by defeating Southern Virginia, 83-74

Greensboro, NC – It had been a week since the Greensboro College Women's Basketball team had played a game, but they used that time to prepare for the final stretch of the season.  On Wednesday they welcomed in Southern Virginia University to Hanes Gymnasium for a battle of two of the top teams in the USA South.  The Pride would withstand a late Knights run to earn their 20th win of the season, by a final score of 83-74.

Southern Virginia got on the board to start the first half, but Sophomore Audrey Jennings (Elkin, NC) took a pass from Senior Ta'Keria Legette (Latta, SC) to tie the game at 2-2.  That was followed by a three-pointer by Sophomore Laruen Livingston (Greenwood, SC) and she would do it again a few possessions later as Greensboro had the advantage, 8-4.  The two teams traded baskets on the next two possessions but back-to-back three-pointers from Senior Karli Mason (Monroe, NC) and Jennings increased the lead to eight points, with a few minutes remaining in the quarter.  Mason drained another three-pointer to put the Pride ahead by double-dights and at the end of the quarter, Greensboro led 23-13.

The second quarter began with a Sophomore Aijah Palmore (Greensboro, NC) layup and after a short Knight's run, Mason would hit her third three-pointer of the game.  At the 3:48 mark of the quarter, Southern Virginia was able to pull to within three points but two free threes from Junior Quadijah Moore (Greenwood, SC) made the score 35-29.  Palmore would follow suit, hitting two free throws of her own, and all of the sudden the lead was back to eight points.  However, the Knights cut the advantage in half and as the teams headed to the locker room Greensboro had a four-point lead, 41-37.

Most the third quarter saw the two teams capitalizing on numerous opportunities and the Pride advantage would stay at three points at the 4:31 mark.  However, a layup from Jennings followed by Mason three-pointer pushed the lead back to eight points 56-48 and then a few possessions later, Jennings would drive in for a layup and all of the sudden, as the quarter ended, Greensboro was back up by double-digits, 62-51.

Southern Virginia would eventually began to make a run in the fourth quarter and pulled to within four points, however Legette stopped the run with a layup in the paint.  The Pride were able to increase their lead to seven points, but the Knights refused to go away.  A Palmore three-point play kept Southern Virginia at bay, but once again, the Knights pulled to within, 73-72.  Moore answered with a jumper and then Livingston converted two free throws, followed by a Jennings basket to pull the Pride back out in front by seven points.  A three-pointer by Senior Alijah Whiteside (Spindale, NC) sealed the win, as Greensboro earned their 20th victory of the season, 83-74.

Jennings led all scorers with 24 points, while shooting 52% from the floor.  In addition, Moore finished with a double-double, 18 points and 10 rebounds and Mason added four three-pointers to finish with 12 points.  The Pride will return to action on Saturday, February 11th as they host Pfeiffer University on Senior Day.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00pm.
