Greensboro, NC – Even though Senior Day was this past Saturday, Wednesday night was the official final home game of the 2022-23 regular season for the Greensboro College Men's Basketball team, as they would welcome in Mary Baldwin University for a critical USA South match-up. It was one that would have implications in the tournament seeding and one that could determine whether there would be another game for the Pride in Hanes Gymnasium. The game would go down to the last second, but Greensboro was unable to come away with the win, falling to the Fighting Squirrels, 84-83.
Senior
Ty Hill (Shallotte, NC) put the Pride on the board to start the first half, but eventually Mary Baldwin would take a three-point lead, 7-4. A Junior
Cassius Gary (Gatesville, NC) three-pointer, followed by a jumper from Sophomore
Grant Thompson (Graham, NC), put Greensboro back out in front and then Junior
Matthew Brown (Orlando, FL) gave them their largest advantage of the game, so far, 20-13. However, the Fighting Squirrels proceeded to score 13 straight points and suddenly the score had flipped and as the teams headed to the locker room for the half, the Pride found themselves trailing, 39-34.
The second half began with Junior
Isaiah Pruett (Asheville, NC) scoring five points to put Greensboro back out in front and the game would stay that way for the next few possessions. With 12:07 remaining in the game, Mary Baldwin regained the lead and proceed to increase it to five points, 62-57. Hill, Junior
Tim Boulware (Greensboro, NC) and Pruett kept the game close and eventually, once again, gave the Pride the lead. A three-point play by Junior
Amillia Huggins (Greensboro, NC) increased the advantage to five points but with only 43 seconds left in the game, the Fighting Squirrels had secured a four-point lead, 85-81. However, as time was about to run out, Pruett drained a three-pointer from the top pf the key and was fouled on the play. He would miss the free-throw but Greensboro grabbed the offensive rebound for one last shot, however, they were not able to convert and fell by a final score of 85-84.
Pruett led the Pride with 19 points, while Brown finished with 18 points and 5 steals. In addition, Boulware added 17 points and Hill grabbed a total of 7 rebounds. Greensboro will return to action Saturday, February 18
th, as they travel to Pfeiffer University for the final game of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
