Greensboro, NC – On Saturday afternoon the Greensboro College Men's Basketball team celebrated its four graduating Seniors in front of a packed house in Hanes gymnasium. Senior
Kevon Wright (Greensboro, NC), Sophomore
Jakai Belton (Gastonia, NC), Senior
Ty Hill (Shallotte, NC) and Junior
Josh McQuinn (Westfield, NC), along with their families, were all honored prior to tip-off and received a framed jersey and a collage poster of their time with the Pride. All four student-athletes have played a significant role in the program both on and off the court and they were ready to do it one more time, as they welcomed in North Carolina Wesleyan University for a USA South match-up.
As the first half began, the Fighting Bishops scored the first four points, but Greensboro would answer with a McQuinn jumper in the paint. However, at the 14:42 mark of the half, NC Wesleyan had jumped out to a 13-point, until a three-pointer by Junior
Matthew Brown (Orlando, FL) trimmed the lead to 17-7. A few minutes later, the Fighting Bishops prevented the Pride from converting on the offensive side of the ball and suddenly had a 21-point advantage. Junior
Amillia Huggins (Greensboro, NC) pulled Greensboro to within 14-points after converting a three-point play. Hill would also drive in for a fast break layup, but as the teams headed to the locker room, the Pride found themselves trailing, 44-22.
NC Wesleyan scored first, to start the second half, but Junior
Tim Boulware (Greensboro, NC) took a pass from Wright for a driving layup. For the next few minutes, the two teams would trade baskets, but Greensboro was unable to cut in the deficit. Mid-way through the half, Boulware and Wright scored six straight points for the Pride, cutting the lead to 64-48. However, that is as close as Greensboro could get, ultimately falling by a final score 87-66.
Boulware led the Pride with 22 points, while Wright finished with 18 points and Brown grabbed a total of six rebounds. Even though this was Senior Day, the Pride will return to action, one more time, at Hanes Gymnasium on Wednesday, February 15
th as they host Mary Baldwin University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
