Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls at Home to Bob Jones University

Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro Women's Basketball team (0-8, 0-1) hosted Bob Jones University (1-4) Saturday afternoon, as the Bruins came out on top 72-66. Tonya Williams was the high scorer for the Pride with 16 points.

It was a tight battle from the start, as both teams couldn't get much separation on the scoreboard. There were a total of 16 lead changes on the afternoon. Greensboro outscored Bob Jones 19-16 in the first quarter as both teams shot the ball well. The Pride shot 58% from the floor in the first period. Tamera Hooker scored 7 of her points in the quarter and totaled 15 points for the game.

The teams traded buckets for most of the second quarter as the Bruins started to hit from beyond the arc. They hit a total of 7 three pointers for the game. Midway through the second period, reigning USA South Rookie of the Week Kensie Harris scored on a layup to give Greensboro a 31-28 advantage. With 3:20 to play, the Bruins scored a layup of their own to take a 32-31 lead. As the half came to a close, Samya Williams hit a jumper to tie the game 35-35 going into halftime.

Bob Jones started the third quarter strong, as Caitlyn Dickerson hit a three point shot followed soon after by another shot from long range by Anna Layne Wylder. The Pride quickly answered with two Tonya Williams layups to bring Greensboro back within 4 points. Later in the quarter, the Bruins extended the lead to 51-44 after another three pointer, this time by Annie Miller. Greensboro Freshman Keyonna Thompson came through with two baskets in the paint, along with a three point shot from Tamera Hooker to tie the game 51-51 late in the period.

Greensboro began the final quarter with buckets by Tonya Williams, Azuria Barrino, and Samya Williams to take a 5 point lead, 59-54. Bob Jones fought back, however, as their offense did a great job of attacking the Pride defense in the paint. Midway through the period the game was again tied 62-62. The teams then went almost two minutes without scoring until two Bruins free throws put them ahead 64-62.

Greensboro wouldn't be able to get enough scoring down the stretch to keep up with Bob Jones. Despite Tamera Hooker's strong effort late in the quarter, the Pride would fall by the final score of 72-66. Despite the loss, Greensboro scored the most points it has all season with 66. They also out-rebounded the Bruins 42-37. Overall, Greensboro shot 38% from the floor and 57% from the free throw line. They also got 24 points from their bench on the afternoon.

Next Saturday the Pride will host Mary Baldwin University for Alumni Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM inside Hanes Gymnasium.
