Pride Women's Basketball Earns First Win of the Season in Overtime Thriller

Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro Women's Basketball team (1-8, 1-1) earned its first win of the season on Saturday in overtime against Mary Baldwin (2-6, 1-3) by the final score of 64-57. Azuria Barrino led the Pride as she earned her second double-double of the season. Barrino finished the game with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Greensboro controlled the game throughout the first and second quarters as their defense really set the tone. The Pride defense contested shots and rebounded well as the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin couldn't find their rhythm on offense.

Greensboro outscored Mary Baldwin 20-14 in the first quarter and 14-10 in the second. Along with Azuria Barrino's 12 rebounds, Tamera Hooker pulled down 10 rebounds of her own on the night. The Pride defense also had 13 steals on the afternoon.

The third quarter saw the Fighting Squirrels get back into the game, outscoring Greensboro 17-6. Mary Baldwin's Aryauna Brent helped lead the comeback as she scored a total of 16 points on the contest. The Pride shot just 13% from the floor in the third period, and needed their offense to come alive if they were going to pull out their first victory of the season.

Greensbro did find just enough offense in the final quarter to force overtime. Tamera Hooker had a chance in the final seconds to win the game, but her two point jump shot fell short and the teams would play an extra 5 minutes to settle the game.

In the overtime period, the Pride shot 4-7 from the floor and 2-2 from the free throw line to seal the win. Tonya Williams was a major contributor in the second half and overtime, as she finished the game with 15 points, including a clutch jumper in overtime. Barrino scored 4 of her points in overtime, while Tamera Hooker scored 2 points and 1 assist, and 3 rebounds in the final 5 minutes.

The Pride will hit the court again on January 3rd when they host Meredith College at 2:00 PM.
