Greensboro, NC - Greensboro Men's Basketball (3-6) hosted Maryville (8-2) on Friday afternoon and fell 70-62.
Tim Boulware led the Pride in points with 14, while
Grant Thompson scored 12 points and pulled down 5 rebounds.
It was another hard fought effort for Greensboro as they faced a tough Maryville squad who had won 7 straight games coming into the day. The game stayed close throughout, as there were 8 total lead changes. Greensboro led for most of the first half, as the offense started strong and the defense once again played well.Â
The Pride held Reed Kemp, then Scot's leading scorer, to just 3 points. RJ Simmons came off the bench and scored a game high 21 points for Maryville. The Scots bench scored 30 of the team's 70 points.
For Greensboro. they went 5-19 from long range and 11-13 from the free throw line. The Pride scored 32 points in the paint compared to Maryville's 20. Greensboro also scored 18 points off the Scots' 12 turnovers.
The Pride's largest lead was 7 points, when they took a 27-20 lead in the first half. Greensboro held a 31-29 lead with 1:12 to play in half number one when Maryville hit two free throws to tie the game going into halftime. The second half was a back-and-forth battle. The Pride gained momentum during the first part of the second half when
Griffin Powell hit a three pointer to give Greensboro a 41-37 lead with 16:21 left to play.Â
As the Scots kept the pressure on, the Pride took a 47-45 lead midway through half number two. The game continued to stay tight when the Scots finally broke through to take the lead after a Jackson Garner three point shot with 9:32 left. Greensboro tied the game a few minutes later 55-55 after two free throws by
Isaiah Pruett. After those free throws, Maryville went on a 7-0 run to create separation.
The Pride didn't go away, however, and got the deficit to 2 points with just 2:10 to play. After a missed free throw by the Scots,
Matthew Brown hit a layup to bring the score to 63-62. Early in the next possession for Maryville, Jackson Garner hit a huge three point shot to give the Scots a 4 point lead. Unfortunately for Greensboro, they wouldn't be able to get a bucket on the next possession, and would eventually fall 70-62.
For the Pride,
Javion Majette scored 8 points and pulled down 6 rebounds.
Matthew Brown scored 7 points and had 7 boards. Greensboro shot 46% from the field and got 13 points from their bench.
